The following selection of schemes
provides an illustration of the scale of project with
which the firm has been involved as consulting transportation
and civil engineers:
Salford Quays VISSIM Micro-simulation
Model
We were commissioned in July 2001 to provide
transportation assistance in the lead up to
the opening of the
Designer Outlet Centre at the Lowry, Salford
Quays.
A VISSIM model was built using
dynamic assignment to model the impact of development
traffic on the existing network. Vehicle actuation
was employed to simulate the priority trams are
given over general traffic.
A conventional TRANSYT model
was then adopted to provide fully optimised results
to assist GMUTC in updating existing signal timings.
Middlebrook Centre, Bolton
This development covers around
100 ha, and includes mixed retail, commercial,
leisure and residential uses, plus the re-location
of Bolton Wanderers Football Club to the Reebok
Stadium.
We were successful in satisfying
the Secretary of State on appeal that the substantial
peak travel demand could be satisfied in a sustainable
manner.
Kingsmead,
Northwich, Cheshire
This greenfield site was won
for residential development through the Local
Plan process. With a capacity of 1800 units, it
was at that time, the largest housing development
in the NW. Our involvement centred on the resolution
of the transport implications including the provision
of a new bypass to London Road.
Meadowhall Shopping Centre,
Sheffield
On completion, this was the largest
covered shopping centre in Europe. DWP, and later
SCP, were responsible for all vehicle surface
access and car parking proposals throughout the
planning stages up to implementation.
Birkenhead Town Centre Redevelopment
We are commissioned to prepare
a comprehensive transport assessment to accompany
a planning application
for the redevelopment of Birkenhead Town Centre.
The proposals incorporate 80,000 sq ft of non-food
retail development and 78,000 sq ft for a major
food-retail operator.
Major highway infrastructure
alterations are proposed to accommodate enhanced
facilities for public transport, provide adequate
car-parking and to improve the environment for
pedestrians.
Our assessment incorporates safety
audit, highway design, accident analysis, parking
and servicing management plans, and a green travel
plan.
A VISSIM micro-simulation model
was developed in parallel with TRANSYT to test
the benefits offered by the proposed highway solution,
to public transport operators and pedestrians.
The proposals have also been
designed to allow for the continued penetration
of the successful free electric-minibus service
provided throughout Birkenhead as part of the
Jupiter Initiative (Joint Urban Project in Transport
Energy Reduction).
Lowry Centre, Salford
This is one of the Country's
major Millennium projects and our role was to
demonstrate the acceptability of the transportation
implications of the Centre itself plus the proposed
large adjacent retail and leisure complex from
which part of the ongoing operational funding
of the whole project will be derived.
Kingsway Business Park, Rochdale
Covering an ultimate area of
170ha, this scheme is being promoted by Wilson
Bowden Ltd, Rochdale MBC, the Regional Development
Agency and English Partnerships. Our involvement
concerned the development of 24 ha including a
principal access to the whole development from
Kingsway.
Our impact analysis and highway
proposals were accepted by the promoters in advance
of the public inquiry.
Canary Wharf, London Docks
Singleton Clamp &
Partners, have been retained by Canary
Wharf Management Limited to provide specialist
modelling expertise in terms of vehicle and pedestrian
movements through the Wharf and surrounding area.
Unusually, the predominant travel mode is by foot
and our work mostly consisted of modelling the
demand and provision of footway, platform, escalator
and barrier facilities. In our ongoing work in
respect of additional towers, we are responsible
for the development and validation of the Pedroute
Model to test a number of future scenarios to
satisfy London Underground Limited and Her Majesty's
Railway Inspectorate in respect of the operation
of the Jubilee Line Station.
A VISSIM moving image-micro-simulation
model of the Wharf has also been commissioned.
Re-Location of Shrewsbury Town Football Club
Planning permission, subject
to the signing of a S106 agreement, has recently
been granted for Shrewsbury F.C to move to a purpose
built 10,000-seater stadium at the New Meadow
on the southern outskirts of the town. We were
successful in resolving all off-site highway issues
with the local highway authority and the Highways
Agency.
A comprehensive Travel Plan,
covering all match scenarios, was also approved,
and this will be the subject of a S106 obligation
on the Football Club to ensure that the greatest
choice of travel modes is available to both home
and away fans. The development also comprises
community recreation facilities and parking for
650 cars and 50 coaches.
Burton Waters
Marina, Lincoln
Set in 140 acres, this is a
large-scale mixed scheme on the outskirts of
Lincoln off
the Fossdyke
Canal.
It comprises, a 150 berth marina, 260 dwellings,
hotel, health and leisure centre, nature reserve,
leisure lakes, museum plus ancillary development
The particular interest here was to promote
sustainable
travel in what is a rural location. The key was
the establishment of a 200 space park and ride/park
and sail facility for journeys to and from Lincoln
City Centre.
Langton River Berth Environmental
Assessment
Commissioned by Mersey Docks
and Harbour Company as part of the Environmental
Assessment team assembled by ABP, we produced
a Transport Assessment of the proposal for the
first River Berth on the east bank of the Mersey.
The assessment examined the highway
impact of 300,000 unit’s p.a. passing through
the ro-ro terminal from 2 No. 125-unit vessels.
In conjunction with Twelve Quays, the proposal
was forecast to result in a nett reduction of
some 280 HGV movements per day across Sefton and
Liverpool.
The assessment forecast localised
increases in traffic around the terminal itself
and along certain corridors between the docks
and the strategic road network.These
areas were monitored for noise and air quality
impacts.
The proposal obtained planning
permission subject to a S106 agreement, which
committed MDHC, amongst other issues, to the provision
of a signing strategy and to a pedestrian-crossing
improvement along Balliol Road.
A Green Travel Plan was also
provided for future operators of the facility
to ensure that employees and visitors alike were
provided with adequate travel alternatives to
the private car.
Dickens Heath Village, Solihull
This development of up to 1100
dwellings is based upon the concept of a typical
Warwickshire Heritage Village conceived by the
Prince of Wales's Architect, John Simpson.
Modern highway engineering experience was used
in a manner that placed no reliance on current
universal design standards, other than those protecting
safety.
